Star Lab Announces KVM Support for Titanium Technology Protection

Washington D.C — Nov. 4, 2022 — Star Lab Corp®, a global leader in delivering technology protection software for mission-critical systems, today announced it is moving to support Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), an open-source virtualization technology that turns Linux into a hypervisor.  This development is part of a multi-year effort to optimize Star Lab software to support the growing use of virtualization in industrial and defense systems in the United States.

Star Lab’s Titanium Technology Protection is the most widely deployed commercial technology protection software used in the aerospace and defense market today.  Titanium is used at various layers of the software stack to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of critical software and data in the Intel Industrial SoCs, these capabilities include secure boot, data-at-rest protections, mandatory access controls, kernel hardening, and secure virtualization using the Xen hypervisor.

However, a shake-up in the virtualization market has been under way since before 2020.  KVM has unseated Xen as the most popular and best supported open-source virtualization solution on the market.  Amazon, Redhat, Oracle, and other companies have all migrated to a KVM-based offering.  And while VMware still maintains a large market share due to its ease of use, its proprietary closed-source business model limits any real efforts to achieve strong technology protection effects.

“KVM is the right technology for Star Lab to support,” said David Esler, Star Lab’s Director of Product.  “With Titanium for KVM we can extend the protections we already have in the Linux kernel to address virtualization-specific challenges, without becoming the virtualization platform provider.”

“The goal with our KVM solution is to achieve the same level of protection no matter where the system resides, whether that be directly on the host or as a Titanium protected Linux virtual machine,” said Adam Fraser, Chief Operating Officer of Star Lab Corp.  “Our customers want to use virtualization solutions that come with their Linux distribution.  They do not want the additional programmatic risks or costs that come with adding additional layers to their software stack.  By adding support for KVM to our Titanium Technology Protection kernel solution, Star Lab brings to bear its decades of expertise and experience with virtualization and the Linux kernel to offer customers an easy to integrate, highly performant, security and technology protection solution that complements virtualization.  Customers will be able to take advantage of the benefits of virtualization while also feeling confident that sensitive data remains confidential.”

An early access release of Titanium for KVM is expected in second quarter of 2023 with a general availability release expected in the fourth quarter of 2023.
